Class Offerings

Classes offered may include the following (recommendations do not necessarily exclude those who do not fit the criteria):

Classes are generally the same year to year. If you have already taken one, it is recommended that you do not request it again.


College Music Prep
An exploration of participating in music beyond high school as well as what to expect at college. This class is especially recommended for students considering majoring, minoring, or having a career in music.
Recommended Age: Upperclassmen


Composition
Students learn the basics of writing music and harmonization.  This class is limited to 16 participants.
Recommended Skills:
- Able to read music in both treble and bass clefs


Conducting
Students are introduced to the art of leading a musical ensemble by learning the basic skills of the conductor.


Jazz History
Students explore jazz from its historic roots to modern day practices.


Jazz Improvisation
Students receive training on improvising, or creating instantaneous melodies while performing.  


Music Theory (Middle School Track)
Students will learn basic concepts of music including reading in both treble and bass clefs, key signatures, and terminology. Excellent for beginners.


Music Theory (High School Track)
Students continue theory practice with intermediate level concepts such as key signatures, scales, and chords, among other topics.


Music History
An overview of the history of western music.


Ear Training
Students will develop aural skills and learn to recognize melodies and intervals by listening.

Music Technology

Music Technology
An introduction to the world of music software including MIDI and Finale. Class is limited to 10 participants.
Recommended Skills: Basic computer skills

Rhythm

Rhythm
Students focus on counting and learning various rhythm patterns through multiple performance methods. 
Recommended Age: Middle School

World Music

World Music
An interactive introduction to the music of other cultures.
